The Hat got a little wet....

Brisbane Floods 2011

Well the clean-up has began for Brisbane... This week started by going back to work on Monday after a lovely break over Christmas and New Years. As some of you will know it was a bit of a rainy break for those who stayed in Brisbane. All that rain came crashing down on the city's and towns around Brisbane last Monday with deadly flash flooding. Which resulted in the damn filling up and then having to be opened into the Brisbane river. There was simply too much water and it broke it's banks and spilled into neighbourhoods and business centers causing extreme havoc.

Crazy times here in Brisbane. I mean really, who can say they had to go home from work because their city was flooding? Luckily Steve and I live up on a hill in Auchenflower- but some of our friends haven't been so lucky. Aine's poor house was almost flooded, another meter and her bottom floor would have had gross muddy flood water running though it. I'll post the progression of her house below. We are cut off from the downtown area of the city, and surrounding areas. Thank-goodness the water has finally started to reseed- it was approaching the bottom of our street. Steve and I are super lucky to have power- all the neighbourhoods around us don't have power. On Tuesday morning before it started to get really bad around us Steve went out and bought some canned food, which was good because now all the stores are closed and they can't restock the shelves.

Brisbane will feel the effects of the flood for the next couple months/ years. But like I said we live up on a hill and are safe and dry- we feel very fortunate. We've been home from work all week, just walking around taking pictures of the flood water and damaged homes. Here is what we've seen...

You can see the progression, first is a store and a phone booth- next is Aine's house...

This is the way I walk to the train station to go to work everyday, and the building through the trees is where I do yoga...
This is how much it has risen two hours later..
